Have a special application that requires a custom crane? Thern has you covered to lift, lower, and position with confidence. From water/wastewater plants and construction companies to industrial manufacturers and OEMs, our experienced in-house engineers can consult, design, and implement necessary modifications to provide you with customized solutions for any industry or application.

Constructing a Custom Crane: Steps for Success

Our comprehensive custom engineering process starts with our team reviewing any written specifications before discussing the application with you. We strive to gain a deep understanding of your goals by asking questions regarding additional requirements, budget, potential unit volume, and expected time to deliver. This is to ensure that we have a complete and accurate record of your information.

Once your application is well defined, we determine if our standard modular models can fulfill your needs. Our ultimate goal is to save you time and money with our recommended solutions. If a custom crane is required, Thern has several decades of experience and a talented team of in-house engineers to design and manufacture the perfect solution for you.

When applicable, our team will develop a concept of a possible solution and share this with you, along with a rough budgetary price and lead time. If the proposal meets your needs, we create an estimated performance table to use for selecting materials. We then research all the applicable costs and material availability for any special items required. The itemized estimate is used as a reference by our design engineers when the order is received.

Our employees love a good challenge and enjoy overcoming obstacles even more. A few common challenges that we’ve previously solved include selecting material sizes that are readily available, minimizing crane deflection, and maintaining practical component weights for portability.

One recent example of a custom crane was for our client, National Oilwell Varco. They required a heavy-duty crane with an extreme load rating, boom reach, and hook height. Their application involved a lift of 6,600 lbs a height of 115’, a crane reach of 177”, and a hook height of 158” above the crane mounting surface.

This custom crane required a maximum capacity that was 200% greater than our largest standard davit crane, the 5FT40 Series, so we needed to sketch an idea of a solution and select completely new materials for the crane and winch to meet the client’s needs. The baseline products used in developing this custom crane were the 5FT40HX-E3ELX, 5FT40TPL, and 5FT40LS-EL.

Senior Application Engineer, Jeff Wilkowski, noted, “We can design and manufacture cranes that include almost any feature, with the only limitations being possible manufacturing capability and material availability.”

Count on Thern to move it all from big to small. Our expert engineers are ready to provide the ideal solution for your project. Connect with us today on how we can help elevate your efficiency on the job!
