Het blussen van dergelijke branden met water kan de brand versterken doordat de olie op het watervlak drijft en zich uitbreidt, ook kan het water veranderen in stoom onder het olieoppervlak en een explosie veroorzaken. In dergelijke gevallen gebruikt men een schuim om de zuurstof uit de brand te halen.
