Thern Winch "Mettes" Needs For Stairway Installation

Located just an hour’s drive west of Orlando, Mette Construction has been serving mid-state Florida for just under a decade. As a commercial construction company, they specialize in metal buildings and structural steel fabrication. Recently, they contributed to the creation of the new Federal Courthouse in Orlando.

Designed by award-winning architect Andrea Leers, the building specifications included 14 courtrooms opening to a four-story lobby. As part of the construction process, Mette was charged with installing stairs inside the building. To accomplish this hefty task, the company ordered a Thern worm gear power winch, model 4WP2T8.

The model series can support up to a 2,000 lb capacity and features a 115-volt single phase electric motor. Each winch is designed with machine cut worm gears, which operate in an enclosed oil bath, assuring accurate operation and long lasting service. An internal mechanical break is also a standard feature, as it provides positive load control for lifting and lowering operations. The 4WP2T8 also has a pressure plate to apply pressure to drum and wire rope to help maintain uniform winding.

“We’ve finished the project at the courthouse, but I will definitely use this winch for other construction jobs,” said Paul Mette, the company’s Vice President, “it’s easy to handle and maneuver, and works perfectly for this application.”

Before choosing a Thern winch, the construction company employed the use of a tower crane to install stairs. Their selection is no surprise, since for over thirty years business such as Mette have turned to Thern for their lifting and pulling needs.
