Thern Winches Help Keep Area Erectors Centered

When the Precast Division of Area Erectors, Inc. was chosen to erect concrete balcony slabs for a new apartment building in Lombard, Ill. they needed a winch that would work with a jig to adjust the center of gravity of the slabs as they were placed. They chose a Thern M492B spur gear hand winch with double reduction.

ImageFor the past 17 years, the Precast Division of Area Erectors, Inc. in Rochelle, Ill. has specialized in the installation of precast concrete panels in both structural and architectural applications. The projects they work on range from parking decks and warehouses to hotels and office buildings.

A company that prides itself on the ability to complete difficult jobs safely and efficiently, Area Erectors has the experience and knowledge to choose the right tools for every job. That is why it’s no surprise to find Thern winches being used on Area Erectors job sites.

The job at Highlands of Lombard required Area Erectors to place 500 concrete slabs weighing 7,500 lbs. each for the balconies of the apartment building. The weight of the slabs along with the added weight of the 1,000 lb. jig used to cantilever the slabs into place required the use of a winch powerful enough to handle the weight.

ImageArea Erectors purchased a Thern M492B spur gear hand winch to use for pitch control and used it in conjunction with a Thern 482B worm gear hand winch to adjust the roll while cantilevering each of the slabs into place. They also purchased a higher capacity wire rope to fit into the winch that allowed them the appropriate weight capacity for the line pull.

In the past they had used a chain fall with a power winch for this type of job, but for this application a hand winch with a wire rope assembly was ideal. The flexibility and ease of electric power was not required for a job that could be accomplished just as easily and at a lesser cost with Thern’s double reduction spur gear hand winch.

The Thern M492B spur gear hand winch they used for pitch control is a double reduction winch that handles up to a 10,000 lb. capacity. It features an automatic brake to provide positive load control for lifting and lowering operations. The winch’s large diameter drum minimizes the wear to extend wire rope life. The handles adjust in length to change force depending on the amount of force required to move the load. Spring-loaded ratchets are used for positive engagement with the gear.

ImageArea Erectors also used a Thern 482B worm gear hand winch, which they had purchased for a previous job, to adjust the roll of the precast slabs. The 482B winch has a capacity of up to 4, 000 lbs. and uses machine cut worm gears to provide accurate operation and long lasting service. The gears are enclosed in an oil bath to provide continuous lubrication and minimize wear. Model 482B also has an automatic brake for positive load control and an adjustable handle for changing the force.

All Thern hand winches are finished with a durable paint combined with zinc and iridescent dichromate plating to protect against corrosion for lasting service so Area Erectors will be able to continue using all of their Thern products for many jobs to come.
